« Back to Glossary IndexOften expressed in terms of masculinity and femininity, gender is a social construct largely determined by culture. Gender is most often assumed based on the perceived biological sex that’s assigned at birth. For example, if a baby is born with primary sexual characteristics that look like a vulva, they are determined to be biologically female and their gender is assigned; they are described as a girl and referred to with the pronouns “she/her”.
